Cheap bikes: Create problems.

I bought a bike and I reckon it's fair to say I've had a couple of problems with it, so after yet another life threatening situation/major part failure it was suggested that I write a post about it. These Create/Unipak bikes are being sold to thick shites like me who instead of building their first bike (too much effort) go for the McDonalds version instead.

This is a list of the problems I've had since I bought a Create singe speed/fixed gear bike in January, so this is a 5 month list. That's still in warranty, right? Right? Never remember these things.

First of all straight out of the box, it's supposed to require a little assembly (wheels/bars on that sort of thing). To us first timers that implies that everything else must be in good nick right? WRONG, everything needs tightening. Simple as that.

The caliper brakes are awful, about as effective as pressing a wet sponge against your rims. Not a problem as such, just shit.

Creaky pedals, again not a massive problem but on a brand new bike it's a bit of a slap round the chops.

One day I was out on the thing, a kid jumped out in front of me swerved and got me foot caught in the spokes (injury pic here) I know this isn't a problem with the bike but the spokes turned out not to be metal, or at least no metal I've ever come across. Best guess is that they were a hardened plastic? The things flex and bend so easily. So bendy spokes, again more a quality issue than a problem. (Also no spoke key fits them, they're like a 13 or something. Nothing that's on a normal spoke key.)

My main problem came with the rear wheel, first of all the lock ring WOULD NOT stay tight, sprocket was rotafixed, everything was greased up and cleaned regularly. So I took decent care of the thing, anyway the thing kept skipping and slipping, causing me to have a couple of accidents:

So this one ended up scarring. After this kept happening (each time I was taking the thing apart re-greasing, rotafixing skidding it out tightening it 2-3 times) every couple of weeks I was starting to get a bit pissed off.

Anyway, one day I had a really bad slip trying to crank away from a junction, crashed out and would have been in serious trouble had the guy in the car been going fast. This time when I took the thing apart, the sprocket looked like this:

Yep those are the hub threads. I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure they're not meant to be there. So in 3 and a half months I managed to totally strip a rear hub. Now you could argue that I ride it too hard or I skid too much but here's the thing.... I haven't even had to replace a tyre yet.

Going through a rear hub before going through a tyre isn't normal is it?

So to get to work I swapped the flip flop hub over to ride it single speed put all the brakes back on and all that malarkey and it lasted two rides of less than 5 miles in all. The bearings just jammed, the freewheel went wonky so the chain just wouldn't stay on.

Ok so we're nearly up to date, I replaced the back wheel. Running a blb rear hub with the original Create sprocket/lockring. Again I was having problems with the lockring slipping and skidding out despite everything being greased and on SO tight.

Slipped out again the other day, crashed out and dislocated my shoulder (& possibly fractured my wrist, still need to go to the walk in).

Ok, fair enough new wheels take a little while to bed in, so I tightened it up again and gave it another chance but this morning it slipped a little again. I wanted to see how bad it was so I tried a little skid on the flat and it just popped off. It just came clean off the hub.....

So yeah, in summary I just wouldn't buy a Create. I would tell anyone else not to bother too unless they fancied just having to replace EVERYTHING as the bike slowly tried to kill them.

A shite bike is not worth your LIFE. (dramatic ending)

The offending tweet:

The judges comment that he was 'satisfied' that the message was of a ‘menacing nature in the context of the time we live in’ is disingenuous at best and at worst is just fucking wrong.

The offending element is the use of the word 'context', as this conviction seems to be predicated entirely on the refusal to acknowledge that a layer of context has been removed.

This layer of context, which would render the comment at worst 'in bad taste' or more probably in the 'utterly shite joke' category, was one of frustration and the irony that (as put into the context of his entire twitter output) he was of good character and had no ties to terrorism.

The disregard of the (rather important) layer of context of original intention in order to base and implement your judgement upon another which you at a later date have defined renders the judgement null. For example: charging a soldier with the death of another soldier after choosing to ignore that irritating obstruction to conviction, the context of 'war'.

Although I've not yet seen it, I doubt even Chris Morris' bumbling jihadis would be thick enough to pre-publicise a terrorist attack through such ineffectual means as twitter.

This blog has gone prettttty quiet but it's for a few reasons...

I have no internet at home being the main one.
I'm in the middle of starting up freelance stuff which at the minute is going under the 'Great North Eastern' banner.
I had an amazing visit at the weekend.
I've got no photos from going out riding as I'm still waiting to get a new rear wheel as I stripped the threads on my last one.
I'm trying to put new prints/portfolio stuff together.

No doubt evidence of some of the above will start making it's way here at some point. But yeah that's what's up.

Down at the London Fashion Weekend (as I found out, a MAJOR difference from the fashion 'week') one of the few designers I thought stood out was Eley Kishimoto, the prints were absolutely excellent. Really beautiful well executed patterns used in interesting and imaginative ways.

These painted photos lend a lot of atmosphere to the designs and give a great feel to the whole collection. The cuts are beautiful and really use the fabrics well.

The trends starting to come through for the autumn menswear season seem to be largely militarily inspired especially in the cuts, I'm not a massive fan of the khaki/beige colours being bounced around though. Lou Dalton's stuff is an injection of colour into this fairly drab scenario with tartans and oranges being thrown in to lift the garments from their gothic underpinnings.

My standouts from the Topman Design show, they've gone very military for Autumn but the splashes of colour work well. This T is really nice, a follow on from the tie-dye trend by the looks of things.

This is a great jumper, really chunky and nordic looking.

Yesterday I deleted a post I'd been writing called 'Alexander McQueen and why you should give a shit.' I deleted it because I was struggling to articulate why it was that I loved him and his work so much. He was a hero, he was one of my main inspirations and it was the only place I ever really wanted to work. I was offered a chance to do a placement with him but was offered a job and due to money (lack thereof) I had to take the job instead of the placement, I figured that I'd always have the chance later on. I won't. His no bullshit attitude and huge work ethic made him what he was and it's horrible that he's passed on.

I'm afraid my lack of posting boils down to the colliding factors of having LOADS on at work and the main reason of the girl who's free internet I was stealing moving out and taking it with her, how dare she? I mean what a complete bitch.

But in other news I've now booked my holidays which are taking me to Berlin at the end of march and Swaziland (yeah I had to check Google maps too) end of July start of August. Not a bad couple of destinations that, need to get a camera sharpish! Can't really trust a memory thats riddled with more holes than a condom after you've pissed off an ex.

Had my first trip to Leicester's Brighton Beach with a surprise crowd of Tom, Mark, Mike and Sam. Great music, hot girls and enough booze to kill a Scottish town = a GREAT NIGHT. Ended with me shouting abuse at a girl driving one of those anti-rape buses, another high point of my life...

I'm sure y'all can top that with your levels of excitement so comment and one up me. k?

APC Spring '10 standouts.

I love APC, very french and very clean. Their new lookbook has a few real standout pieces:

This mac (355euros), t (40euros) and desert boots (245euros) are amazing but I'm never keen on white trousers.

I'm not keen on the colour but this cardigan (165euros) has a great cut, so too do the trousers (180euros) and I love the washed out white t (40euros).

And this is the ultimate duffel coat. It's amazing and I want it. Where am I going to get 375 euros though?

One for the Textile Designers out there.

This garment landed on my desk this morning, it's a T from Bershka and has quite an interesting technique on that I don't think I've seen before. No doubt it's been around a while but it's definitely a new idea at work. The T has rows of sequins stitched in a rectangular arrangement and my initial thought was that each sequin had been individually coloured which I quickly realised couldn't be done.

How they've done it is sublimation printing directly onto white sequins which have already been sewn to the shirt. You can tell by the run off either side at the top where the design has missed the sequins a bit. I'm not sure how they've avoided getting dye on the shirt, I'm assuming that this couldn't be done with a white top as it would inevitably transfer some of the dye to the fabric. But I think it's a fairly safe technique with darker bases like the charcoal here.

Has anyone else seen more of these? Are there any white ones? I'm aware of a similar technique which involves printing the garment first (with water based inks) and then sewing transparent sequins over the top. Just don't think it looks as good...

Colour Cheat.

A little design tip for those that love colour but aren't great at refining a pallette (this is me, in case you hadn't already guessed). Find an image you love that has a similar broad range of colour to what you want to end up with. Copy and paste it into illustrator, and use the live trace but set the number of colours really high. Expand the traced image and you'll have a mosaic version of the photo you love. It's then very easy to pick out the colours that work well together. I'm sure that tip is already old news to most people but I find it pretty useful!

Both images are from ffffound! and the colour palettes are ones that make me look forward to summer.
